The summit of G20 Leaders in Pittsburgh on 24-25 September 2009 was the third such meeting. The genesis of the G20 Leaders’ summits is a slight mystery. It seems nobody thought it worthwhile to tell President Bush that the G20 was a group of Central Bank Governors and Finance Ministers that met in the wake of the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997-98. In an off the cuff response to talk that the G7 was no longer as relevant a grouping as before, and no doubt also wanting to ensure his last few months in office were not seen as equally irrelevant, President Bush invited the G20 Leaders to Washington in November 2008 to discuss the credit crunch.
